The Crushed Monocle Podcast is a show where Jon and Coop talk about stuff. ALL the stuff! Music, movies, shows, life, or whatever. Naturally, they will mispronounce names, poke fun at themselves, and never fail to profess their love for Showgirls’ 1995 masterpiece. Doesn’t that excite you? Sure it does! This is why it’s essential that you subscribe to this podcast on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you consume fine podcasts. This is the Crushed Monocle Podcast: Episode 12 – The Ballad of 1997!

After the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (discussed in Episode 2), the music industry wanted a clean slate. Airwaves were no longer cluttered with hundreds of artists who may or may not have deserved record deals. No, every radio station and music video channel had to be streamlined for maximum profit with minimum exposure. With every outlet owned by a major label, why ask the listener what they wanted to hear when they could tell them what they wanted? Needless to say, 1997 was a dark year for the music industry.

In The Ballad of 1997 episode, Jon and Coop discuss intertwining topics relating to that fateful year such as:

  • Payola becoming common practice on both radio and MTV
  • Pop radio compartmentalizing feminism and selling it as empowerment
  • Mainstream radio only accepting Hip-Hop when its about success
  • Respecting Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray despite making God-awful music
  • Electronica music being the new punk at the time
  • There will be no pro-ska talk on Crushed Monocle Podcast

Other than 1997, Jon and Coop are celebrating another monumental event; the Crush Monocle Podcast one year anniversary!

What started as sort of an experiment with rebranding BGM’s First Of The Month Podcast, has now become a full-blown entity standing on its own merits! With guests such as Brandan Perras, Kellii Scott, BJ McDonnell, Steve Albini, Zola Jesus, and Pulp Fictionally, we’ve been very fortunate to have a wide variety of conversations. But most importantly, we want to thank every single person who has liked, subscribed, commented, shared, or just listened to a single episode of this show! There’s no shortage of white dudes sharing their opinions on the internet so it means a lot you’ve taken the time to listen to ours. We got some really fun stuff in store so thanks for sticking around!

Do these topics interest you? Well, you’ve stuck it out with us for this far, so we gotta be doing something right! While you’re here, don’t forget to subscribe, like, and share The Crushed Monocle Podcast in your favorite format. So, kick back and enjoy Jon and Coop as we talk about stuff. ALL the stuff!
