This is why you must subscribe to this podcast on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you consume fine podcasts. This is the Crushed Monocle Podcast: Episode 27 – John Davis: Indie Royalty!

Joining Jon and Coop in this episode is John Davis, the frontman for Superdrag, The Lees Of Memory, and a ton of other indie rock projects!

Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, John Davis cut his teeth on the best DIY music the scene had to offer. From The V-Roys, Rude Street Peters, to Pegclimber, and Punch Wagon. Before too long, he found himself on the same stages as the bands he idolized. Things got even more interesting when his own band Superdrag, was burning up the airwaves and conquering MTV. But when mainstream rock became Nu-metal, Superdrag found a new audience as the next generation’s Guided By Voices.

After label battles and disillusionment with the scene, Davis got clean and started carving out new avenues to articulate his musical endeavors. After forming multiple new bands such as thrash punks Epic Ditch, psyche-country Rectangle Shades, and the experimental power-pop-meets-shoegaze of The Lees Of Memory, Davis has found a healthy groove of living life and making records.

However, the gospel-meets-The Beatles vibes of John Davis’ solo career just might be his most rewarding.

Davis gets candid with Jon and Coop and talks about the highs and lows of various rock n’ roll topics such as:

  • The rise of Superdrag in Knoxville’s punk scene
  • Living the legendary wisdom of RZA and The Wu-Tang Clan
  • Green Day costing thousands of dollars worth of damage while on tour
  • Recording with Kurt Cobain’s guitar
  • How live bands on analog will always slaughter digital recording
  • Beating the Foo Fighters at their own game on their own turf
  • The future and non-future of various musical projects

Most Importantly, John Davis explains how he continues to move forward creatively, mentally, and spiritually!
