Breaking Even Band Interview

Breakout Band: An Interview With Breaking Even

New Jersey pop-punk band Breaking Even have been rocking the upper East Coast after coming off their recent spring EP Sadder But Wiser. In between playing shows and their own lives, they’ve also released two new singles and are already planning new music.

I was able to interview Breaking Even’s lead singer LJ Goity after the release of their most recent single “Femme Fatal”. We talk about the band’s future, fans’ reactions, and if pineapples really do belong on pizza!

Your band just released your EP Sadder But Wiser last March! How has it gone over with fans so far? I know me personally, I think it rocks!

So far our fans have really connected and vibed with a lot of the songs from Sadder but Wiser. Everyone seems to feel all of the energy in our songs at our live shows and the fans that have gotten back to us seem to all have a certain song from the EP that they feel they could relate to and that’s exactly what we were hoping for!

What is your favorite song off of Sadder But Wiser?

I think my favorite song to listen to from Sadder But Wiser is probably “Narcolepsy”! But, my favorite song to play live is “Goodluck Goodbye”!

How do you hope people react to your newest single “Femme Fatal” that will be released?

With the release of our single “Femme Fatale” we hope that people will enjoy the song as an example of the versatility not only Breaking Even has, but our genre [pop-punk] as a whole has! It’s a bit different from our other tracks and we hope fans will appreciate that!

Is there a new EP or maybe even an album in the works?

THERE IS ALWAYS NEW MUSIC IN THE WORKS WITH THIS BAND!  We will be in the studio later this week to bring you guys another single we plan on releasing before the end of the year! On top of that, we do have plans to continue recording in the upcoming months and have another EP out by early summer 2020!

Any plans on touring in the near future?

We don’t have any definitive plans to tour as of right now but we are playing the New Jersey/New York/Philly a lot in the upcoming months! And hope to be doing some small tours by the end of this upcoming year!

What do you hope your band will bring to the music scene?

I really hope that we bring the scene our style and our take on something that feels familiar. I hope people listen to our music and feel connected and like they can relate. I hope that we are a band in the scene that makes people feel something special in every song!

What’s a goal Breaking Even are aiming for music-wise for the new year? (It’s never too early to plan new year resolutions)

As far as plans go for the New Year, we are aiming to have a steady stream of new content out throughout the year! We plan on releasing another EP or two during 2020 as well as try to play as many shows as we can!

Any other cool plans for the new year?

I think collectively we are just really hoping to keep releasing better quality music! I think we want to continue to grow together as musicians and as a band and have our new music reflect that!

Best experience so far as a band?

I think the best experience we’ve had as a band was recently we had the opportunity to open for a group called Stickup Kid in Brooklyn [New York]. It was a really awesome experience because I remember all of us watching them on Audiotree back in 2012 or 2013 and thinking they were phenomenal. Having the chance to open for them and meet them this year was really surreal. They were super cool guys and it was a really fun show for us!

And now for some fun/sightly ridiculous questions!

Favorite Holiday?

My favorite holiday is easily Halloween! Dressing up! scary movies! Spooky decorations! It’s honestly just the best time of year to me!!

Pineapple on pizza? Yes or no?

Unpopular opinion: Pineapple on pizza is delicious. Haters are welcome to hate!

If the Earth was flat, do you think the water would fall off like it did on Asgard (Thor’s home planet)?

The Earth is flat and water already does fall off the sides…..

On that note DC or Marvel? (Don’t worry, there are no wrong answers!!)

That being said: Marvel all day!! Spider-Man is the absolute greatest! No contest! Sorry DC fans!

To close off our interview, do you have any advice to other people out there trying to pursue the musical dream?

As far as advice goes: just do it.  Make music that makes you happy. Don’t worry about if other people will like it. Just make sure YOU like it. Fans will follow!  Breaking Even has been an on/off band since 2009. We’re still here doing it! Don’t let things stop you from doing what you want to do in life if it’s what makes you happy.
