Reckless and Royal: “Beautiful In Blue” | Song Review

Reckless and Royal is a two-person alternative band from Texas. The band will be Blake Hill and Evan Sampere’s first project together since their former band Failure to Notice from the early 2000s. BGM was given the opportunity to review their debut single “Beautiful In Blue,” which dropped earlier this month.

Right out the gate “Beautiful In Blue,” will remind anyone who listened to Linkin Park of Linkin Park. However, there are unique qualities throughout the song that Reckless and Royal used to make the song their own. The song posses a combination of screaming, melodies, and rap. While this style of music isn’t as new as it was five years ago; it does set itself apart from the current alternative scene. As a result, fans of darker sounding music might gravitate to this sound.

Which brings me to the lyrics of the song. The lyrics definitely tell a dark painful story about the thoughts that can surround a dissolving toxic relationship, where both parties allow themselves to feed into that toxicity.

This is why I’m interested to see what Reckless and Royal will showcase musically in the future. While aggressively angry music does have a place in the scene, it would have been more interesting to see more of their musically versatile side. As it was the combination of different vocal styles and rapping that added and maintained an interest in the song.

Overall, the song was solid, while not groundbreaking for the scene, it defiantly works as a song for people wanting to be introduced to genre-blending. It also shows the clear break – music-wise – from their former band Failure to Notice, and Blake Hill’s current band The Hostile Redemption.
