New Jams: The Yugos – Follow You

The Yugos Follow You CoverI try to avoid the radio during the summer. First of all, I’m not really a fan of regular radio to begin with. The same 20 songs on repeat mixed with about 15 minutes of commercials can send me into a rage, especially while enduring rush hour traffic. Summer is even worse, while flat pop ear worms battle for their place as the song that defined that particular year’s summer seem to be on non-stop repeat. Even if you started out enjoying a certain song, you’ll hate it before July ends.

Thankfully there are bands out there producing catchy summer tracks that aren’t super annoying and have a bit of substance to them and as indie artists begin to become more and more prevalent, the radio is less plagued by mindless pop and more and more with music that I actually like. Enter The Yugos’ new single “Follow You”. I have casually listened to the band before and was pointed back their way by Dean Tartaglia from Silent Lions a few weeks ago. “Follow You” is as catchy as any summer pop track, but has some great depth musically that keeps me coming back for more.

The Yugos bandWith it’s bleached out, lo-fi sound, “Follow You” is a perfect ode to a carefree summer and living in the moment. I found myself becoming addicted to the plucky guitars and catchy lyrics. “One thing that I adore / Is sliding in our socks on the wooden floor / Don’t waste your time, cause you won’t get it back / Live your life to the fullest, being empty is whack.” Christian Gough’s lyrics are fun and playful while still driving home that youthful feeling of being carefree and not wasting the time you have, because just like summer, it will be disappear before you know it.

For me, the best part of the track is right at the end. Driving drums and guitars give the song the momentum it needs to get your energy up while Gough repease “I will follow, I will follow you” until his voice breaks into a howl of emotion right before the song comes to a close. It’s that raucous hook especially that makes me not mind that “Follow You” will probably be stuck in my head well into September. Now if only regular radio could catch onto little indie gems such as this one I might not mind tuning in as much.

You can currently name your price for “Follow You” on Bandcamp.
