The Colourist

Album Review: The Colourist – Self Titled

The Colourist CoverHave you heard of The Colourist? I’ll try to be quick because this band is wickedly phenomenal and you have to listen to them. They’re full of energy and you can honestly hear the genuine chemistry between them all. Their self-titled debut album is full of catchy tracks that will make you feel absolutely infinite. It’s refreshing.

Starting out in 2013 and hailing from Orange County, California, The Colourist is a four piece band consisting of  Adam Castilla (vocals, guitar), Kollin Johannsen (guitar, bass), Justin Wagner (bass, keys), and Maya Tuttle (drums, vocals), is destined for great things. They infuse incredible amounts of vibrant melodies, accompanied with perfect harmonies; resonating new uplifting soundscapes. They released their Lido EP last year and it was one hell of a teaser.

The Colourist’s debut album opens up with “Little Games,” a song that was already released on Lido, but is such a great song. There’s so much energy! I’m trying to find the right words to perfectly describe this song, so let me tell you a little back-story. Before I discovered this anthem of mine, I was enjoying one of my new favorite bands, Walk The Moon. I remembering being hooked on their song, “Anna Sun,” so I had to find more tracks  like this. In my search my friends suggested The Colourist’s  “Little Games,” which I decided to get it. Now I didn’t play it right then and there, but I should have. When I finally did play “Little Games” I immediately fell in love with it, within the first twenty seconds. The guitar melodies hook you in and Castilla’s vocals are divine—he’s flawless. I literally melted. The best part is when  Tuttle, their amazing talented drummer, sings beautifully along with Castilla. You won’t find perfect harmonies like theirs anywhere. They compliment each other so well. It’ll take me years to properly describe how amazing their opener is. You also can’t forget how good Johannsen and Wagner are on this song.

Following their fantastic opener is “Wishing Wells.” It’ll leave you speechless. Castilla’s voice is amazing and when accompanied by Tuttle, you’re mesmerized. When Tuttle sings along with that hypnotic baseline—it’s almost impossible to not have it on replay. This is one of those songs that exceeds any expectations. During those four minutes, you’re feeling everything.

If you’re stressed and in need of the perfect outlet, sing along to “We Won’t Go Home” and “Yes Yes” because those are unrivaled. Sing at the top of your lungs. “We Won’t Go Home,” is a powerhouse, while “Yes Yes” is a track where you can dance and show off all those quirky moves. I have all these songs on repeat—if it isn’t already obvious.

Another favorite, “Tonight (Young Hearts)” is upbeat and full of fresh melodies. It’s sweet and honest. Followed by “Stray Away,” which is an enchanting slow-paced song glimmering with nostalgia. It starts out soft; relaxing every tense part in your body. It’s as if you’re cradled in hope and wonder and surrounded by pure warmth. It gradually escalates to this brief, but massive cohesion of strong guitar melodies and heartfelt percussion. It’s thought-provoking to say the least. It’s a beautiful way to tell a love story.

The Colourist BandThe Colourist gets even better with songs like “Fix This,” it’s impossible to not recognize how noteworthy their sound is. Their harmonies are locked in. They have genuine lyrics. Tuttle sings: “I tried so hard/Lift your lie/And I never showed you my cold feet, just my pride/Guess it killed you always…” The album continuously surprises you with greatness—raising your spirits. Closing with “The Further,” is such a great idea. You’re invited right back to the beginning—they remind you how energetic they truly are. You hear what everyone is capable of—you’re hearing all that talent.

I highly suggest you get yourself a copy of The Colourist because it will make you smile as if your wildest dreams came true. The Colourist makes you ridiculously happy! It’s no wonder why this band was on tour with Panic! At The Disco. They’re remarkable. The Colourist is currently on their headlining tour and you should go see them.
