Welp, being as my last installment of this column happened back in January it very much looks like I did not get back into the swing of things in regards to contributing to this fuckin site. However, here I am again giving it another attempt. This is Editor’s Note: Best New Music September 2023!
A TON of great music came out in September and since Kendon asked me to email a list of stuff I was digging, which made me type up like half of this already, I figured I’d post it here on the site as well.
I’m gonna list out the band name, and album name, and then a quick one-to-two-liner description to give you an idea of whether or not you want to hit play on the associated link. Sound good? Cool! Here we go…
Best Albums of September 2023
Night Verses – Every Sound Has A Color In The Valley Of Night: Part One
Listing this first cause it is my favorite thing right now!
Heavy alternative instrumental metal and each element (guitar, bass, drums) is an absolute master class in musicianship.
Traindodge – The Alley Parade
Traindodge just makes amazing progressive-leaning rock. Their drummer is such a heavy hitter. Solid ass music!
Coach Party – Killjoy
Sassy power pop grunge out of the UK.
Small Crush – Penelope
High-energy indie garage stuff mixed with super chill tunes! Logan’s vocals are so sugary-sweet. Such a solid album.
Flat Worms – Witness Marks
Fuzzy psych-punk.
Smoke DZA / Flying Lotus – Flying Objects
I’m picky with hip-hop and this hits all the right spots. FlyLo beats and DZA kills it!
Patio – Collection
Kinda like the band Cola, but simpler. Love the vocals and the vibe!
Mums – Legs
Grungey noise rock, UK.
Gurriers – Nasusea
Love this! Gilla Band adjacent, driving, and super noisy. You can find a little EP of their 2023 singles on most streaming platforms. Get that!
Heavy Lungs – All Gas No Breaks
UK heavy punk shit.
Flooding – Silhouette Machine
Slowcore, Kansas City, dreamy vocals-harsh screams.
Kipp Stone – 66689 BLVD Prequel
Backpack type hip-hop, super chill beats, amazing flow, and lyricism.
KEN Mode – VOID
The other half of the ‘double album’ that was recorded alongside 2022’s NULL. KEN Mode is basically noise rock royalty at this point. Not sure what to say other than it’s just solid creative aggressive music. They always have the best cover art as well. Like literally every album.
BEDTIMEMAGIC – Sleep Together
Boston, two-piece, heavy, consistent as fuck noise rock, and all the song titles are associated with sleeping. Sleeping is fuckin nice at least when it works out, most of the time it’s kinda torture, but when you like sleep-sleep it is very nice.
Wet Fruit – Dandelions At The Gate
Shout out to Matt (follow him on IG or Bandcamp he’s got all the good recs) for this recommendation! Cool ass jangly indie psych pop art stuff. I don’t know. Just hit play!
Cani Sciorri – Atletica 75
Italian hardcore 90s vibe noise rock. Are the vocals in English or Italian, I’m not sure and I don’t care. Get it!
Haurun – Wilting Within
I love the vibes of heavy stoner doomy shit with soft reverbed vocals. Such a good juxtaposition.
Torpor – Abscission
Heavy, slow, mean, nasty, this music is meant to hurt when you listen to it! So satisfying!
Hey Colossus – In Blood
UK, post-hardcore (the good kind), rock music. This band has been around for a minute and just continues to get better and better.
Domkraft – Sonic Moons
Driving heavy psych rock out of Sweden. It just moves and has a ton of chaotic 70’s energy, while having grooves for days.
Soul Blind – Audiotree Live EP
I missed Soul Blind’s 2022 LP, Feel It All Around, but thanks to the always wonderful and very helpful Auidiotree they finally landed on my radar. It’s just heavy 90’s vibe grunge. Reminds me of early Silverchair and I just love it. 90’s flavored rock shit will always have a special place in my heart. Legit, my new favorite band at the moment.
Jesus this list turned out to be long as fuck. It’s like a year-end list but all this stuff came out in September! That’s wild. I’m scared to do an actual year-end list with all the good albums that have come out so far in 2023. It’ll be like a million albums long.
Okay, bye!
