When I think of what I would like to do on a Friday night, heading out to Perris, CA is not very high on my list. It just isn’t. But on Friday, February 20th, I found myself driving out to Perris by myself, solely to see the band, Household, from Minnesota. I didn’t even know what the venue was like, or who else was playing. I just knew that Household was playing and ever since I got wind of them, I have been dying to see them live. Their 2014 release, With or Without, on Blood and Ink Records was my favorite album of the year, so I went in with high expectations.  As I was walking up to where my gps said the venue was, all I saw were motorcycles lined up and big burly dudes in leather vests, staring me down. And here I am in Perris, CA, by myself, with my camera thinking I was going to a hardcore show. I kept walking, wondering if my car was safe, or if I was going to see my wife again. As I got up to the entrance, I was greeted by a guy in a leather vest with a warm smile and he told me how happy he was that I came out to the show. Turned out that he was the man who put it on and it was a benefit show for Samaritan’s Purse to raise money for victims of persecution in Iraq and the venue was a church.
A couple of local bands opened the show and as I waited for Household to play, I got to meet all the band members and talked to them about music, God, the scene, and American made goods. They were some of the nicest people and I felt like I had known them for a long time already. I had to wait awhile for their set to finally come. Church shows are not always the fastest. Household was finally taking the stage around 10:30pm and with the first note, they exploded with energy. Jumps, spins, fist pumps, and head banging galore all the while hitting all their notes. It was a great sight to behold.  And after what seemed like 5 minutes, they were unplugging their guitars. I said my goodbyes to my new friends, excited to have finally seen them live, and even more excited that it lived up to my expectations.
I was able to catch Household’s last song the following day at Programme Boardshop in Fullerton. Again, I was not disappointed. I look forward to their next tour out this way.
