Iron Maiden / Coheed And Cambria @ Usana Amphitheater 08/01/12 SLC, UT

We’ve been meaning to post a concert review on this show for sometime now. But, the words have been escaping us to properly explain the wonder and awesomeness that was the Iron Maiden  / Coheed And Cambria show. So I will keep this post short and sweet.

Coheed and Cambria were spectacular (they always are live). It was a little weird seeing them play in broad daylight, after seeing them headline so many shows. It was cool to see a stripped down version of their set without all the theatricality and the lights. It really made me appreciate their performance and musicianship a lot more. It was good to see their long time drummer Josh Eppard back on board and their new bassist Zach Cooper seems like he’ll be great fit in the band. The band tore through a medley of their songs from their entire cataloge and also threw in a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Heaven & Hell”, which really seemed to get the older more metal oriented crowd enthused. The band did a great job as an opener.

Side Note: Isaac and I are very, very stoked for their new album The Afterman: Ascension to drop October 9th. Here’s a video for the teaser single.

Up next was Iron Maiden and it was obvious by the number of really awesome “Eddie the Head” t-shirts and screams from the crowd, that everybody was super stoked to be seeing these dudes perform again. I have to say that even though everyone in the band is super old they played a fairly energetic and heavy set. Maiden’s singer Bruce Dickinson was all kinds of crazy and spent his time running up and down the bands massive stage setup. I am not very familiar with much of Iron Maiden’s music (I know I suck), but the show seemed solid and the crowd was more than pleased by the six old English codgers. Iron Maiden is world renowned for the live show and now I know why. They killed it.

Side Note: Uncle Nate seemed very interested and surprised that I was attending an Iron Maiden show. Because at a very young age I got him in quite a lot of trouble after telling my grandmother (his mother) that his Iron Maiden “Purgatory” poster was very frightening. After hearing this information my Grandmother immediately ran into his room and tore the poster off the wall, to my pure delight and Nate’s utter devastation. I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Nate for the incident and even though in hindsight this story is extremely hilarious, I do feel kind of bad. So… I’m sorry Nate.
