Maps & Atlases / The Big Sleep / Hands @ Kilby Court, SLC (06/16/12)

I know Uncle Nate has already written a review on this tour, but for the sake of posting all the amazing video that Isaac took at the show. I thought I would share a few more observations from this tour’s date in Salt Lake City.

Observation #1: This was Isaac’s first show at Kilby Court which was is downright crazy to me, since he is like the Daniel Boone of concert exploration.

Obersavation #2: The first opener Hands (Los Angeles based band, not to be confused with the hardcore band by the same name) were awesome. I think the singer’s voice sounds like a mix between Davey Havok and the singer from Elliot (Chris Higdon). Hands is like the perfect mix of Yeasayer and Vampire Weekend with a hint of Idlewild. Check their bandcamp and download their stuff.  http://handssounds.bandcamp.com/

(We can’t figure out the name of this song. If the band reads this let us know, or if anybody else knows the name of this sweet track leave a comment or something, we got to know!) Update: Hands as informed us that the name of this song is “Elegant Road” Thanks Dudes!

Obersavation #3: I agree with all the things Nate wrote about how great The Big Sleep is. The guitar riffs from Danny Barria were super powerful, complex and epic. At times it seemed like there were two or three parts being played simultaneously. Barria must be a wizard or something.

Observation #4: Kilby Court can get crazy packed and if you’re not tricky you’ll have a really hard time seeing the action. Luckily we wedged ourself up next to the stage, which enabled us to get some crazy good pics and videos of Maps & Atlases.

Observation #5: Maps & Atlases frontman David Davison seems really nice and genuine, he thanked the crowd a bunch which was really cool. Also, he had bright orange Chuck’s on that were downright fabulous.

Observation  #6: Maps & Atlases drummer Chris Hainey is from another planet. I was thoroughly amazed at his precision, technicality and power. If he wants me to marry him or be his life long companion, I would definitely try to work that out, because he is such a great drummer.

Observatioin #7: The band had these really cool glowing pyramid shaped technicolor amp stands. And when the went off it made the transparent yellow drum set look super fancy.

Final Observation: Maps & Atlases are one of the tightest, intricate, most creative, orignal sounding bands that have come out in some time. They all seem like really nice guys and their music is fantastic. If you don’t own all their tunes get on it and if they’re ever in your town GO SEE THEM! It will be one of the best shows you will ever see.
